The Shepherd and the Valley
The psalm pictures the LORD as a shepherd who guides, restores, and provides. Green pastures and quiet waters give way to a dark valley, but the speaker does not walk alone. A rod and staff offer comfort in danger.
The image then shifts to a host preparing a table, anointing the guest, and filling a cup. The closing confidence looks toward goodness, loving kindness, and dwelling in the LORD’s house. The poem includes hardship within its hope; it does not claim that the valley never comes.
