David Becomes King

The tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and recognized him as king. He made a covenant with them and was anointed. The chapter tells of his taking Jerusalem and establishing his rule there, along with battles and the growth of his household. David’s kingship brings important changes, but the later narrative also examines the cost and failures of royal power.
