The Baptism of Jesus

John preached in the wilderness and baptized people in the Jordan, calling for repentance. Jesus came to him to be baptized, and John initially questioned this. Jesus answered, and John agreed. Matthew describes the Spirit descending like a dove and a voice from heaven identifying Jesus as the beloved Son. The scene introduces Jesus’ public ministry within the Gospel’s account.
